Negative Phenomena in the Traffic Light Regulation at the Intersections of the City Transport System

Abstract

The motorization level increase leads not only to an increase in the comfort of movement, but also to the transport problems, among which the traffic congestion of city highways and the jam appearance, an increase in the level of accidents can be distinguished. Today, these problems are the most pressing in the world, so their solution is important and the top priority.

Although intersections occupy a small area of the road network, they are the main places of accidents. In this regard, it is at intersections that measures are first introduced to reduce accidents, and in general it determines the relevance of solving scientific problems related to improving the safety of vehicles in the field of road intersections.

One of the most common measures to improve road safety at intersections is the organization of the traffic light regulation. Its introduction makes it possible to reduce the number of conflict points at the intersection by spreading them in time in the corresponding phases. However, according to the statistics of accidents, with a 2-fold decrease in the number of conflict points, the number of accidents decreases only by 30–40 %. This is due to the creation of additional compaction in the traffic flows at regulated intersections, due to which the intensity of interactions between traffic flows at the intersection area increases and, as a result, traffic safety decreases.

The work considers and analyzes the processes of creating additional traffic flow compaction in the form of the significant reduction in the distances between vehicles with the performance of the service braking maneuver, which create the appropriate prerequisites for the traffic accident occurrence.

The obtained formulas for the total value of the compaction number on the approaches to the regulated intersection during the day according to the corresponding traffic light operating modes and control phases allow further development of the theoretical provisions for assessing and reducing negative phenomena during the operation of the traffic light control at the intersection.
